Its now September and the veggie garden has burst into colour. We certainly won’t go hungry we have so much choice, the hard work of the Summer has certainly paid off. We have pumpkins, squash, courgette, shiso leaves, daikon radish, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spring onions, blueberries, apples and even more strawberries!!!! The weeds are doing pretty well too and not a rabbit in sight… hurray!!!!!!!!
Well, the summer hols are flying by far too quickly… We’ve had a great break, we flew to New York and toured the city, what a crazy few days, we did all the usual sites and packed in as many Macrobiotic Restaurants as possible, wow there are some wonderful places to eat… Mana, Souen and the most fantastic Japanese restaurant called Kajitso, temple food & completely vegan, it was a fabulous place & we celebrated my birthday there. We also stopped off at Babycakes, a vegan cupcake cafe, very hip….

We then had a relaxing time on Amelia Island in Florida, a really stunning coastline, peak season and sooooo quiet, we saw dolphins and land turtles, collected huge shells and sharks teeth, had amazing storms, hot steamy days and visited friends in Jacksonville… then back to New York to Palisades and the annual Macrobiotic Conference. This was a truly wonderful weekend, we had some great teachers, met up with friends, made new ones and had a great evening at the ‘Benefit Dinner’… Kerrys highlight was dancing the night away with Jessica Porter boogying to 70’s & 80’s hits! she really is one ‘Hip Chick’!

How does anybody sleep on the 32nd floor?

Now happy to be back, its great to be away, but also good to be home once again…
The Veggies are going wild in this amazing summer heat, I pulled back the netting to see how the Calabrese were doing and found they had turned into monsters! So much eating to do… oh what a shame!
The perilla seeds have sprouted and we are looking forward to some pink shiso leaves soon! This plant (also known as the beefsteak plant) is great for pickling, colouring, garnishing, seasoning and is fab in sushi too.
The particular plant we’re growing, the red perilla, is used to give umeboshi plums their great pink colour.
